Pyre is an action-adventure game developed by Supergiant games.

The game is set in some purgatory. After getting banished by the society, the main character finds himself all alone. Three exiles soon approach him and invite the protagonist to party with them and nickname him the Reader. The group sets out to cleanse their souls.

The gameplay of Pyre revolves around some sports game, which is connected with a ritual known as the Rites, which happens in a parallel world. The Protagonist controls his three newly found friends in battles against three opponents on a small arena. Each team has its own pyre. Both pyres oppose each other. The objective of the game is to defend your pyre while attacking the enemy one. The player can only destroy the pyre with the orb, that is spawned in the center of the arena and which has to be grabbed and thrown into the pyre.

During a round, the Reader can switch between the character he wants to control and pass the orb from one to another. Each player has their own amount of endurance which is required for moving around the arena. If the players of a team come together, they create a zone that is dangerous for the player that carries the orb. If the player with the orb should get into that zone, they'll be temporarily removed from the game.

While free from the Rites, the player can travel through the world of Pyre, train his teammates or try to learn more about the Rites.

While not Supergiants' best and the small growth of gameplay being the weakest part, no words can make up to the beauty and depth of the art, music, story and characters.

It's a Supergiant game so if you played one you know what to expect here in terms of storytelling, visual style, sound and music design. If not you're lucky because the first experience is "wow". Basically in Pyre you take part in tournament playing the magic version of basketball. Aside from competing in Rites you travel (in linear way -- from point to point) the world with your teammates, learn the story mainly from dialogues between characters, meet the new ones, some of whom will join your party and keep track of your party skills in rpg style manner deciding what skill and which character to level up. Your party will grow bigger as you progress, but the matches are always 3 on 3, choosing the teammates for current Riot is a strategy decision. Characters have different skills: some a small fast, some can fly, others move slowly but gain more points for scoring. The basketball mechanics work, but for my taste AI is too easy. I'm playing on PS4 but i have a feeling that this game will shine on an iPAD, because a) there is a lot of text and it's easier to read on a retina screen than on TV b) the control scheme can be translated to touch without sacrifices. All in all, Pyre is very polished and immediately recognizable as Supergiant title. All i miss is that "wow" factor from my first playthrough of Bastion.
«OST on repeat»
When I've bought this game I thought that I will return it in an hour because the description and videos in steam didn't inspire me. Also, I'm not a fan of Bastion and Transistor. They didn't touch ma soul at all. And I'm not going to lie — this game is already my favourite game of the year. Graphics is amazing and every character looks like the main artist put all his soul in them. Storyline is well done and dialogues are interesting to read even in the beginning when you didn't get the game setting at all. And the best part is RITES. You will not fight some asses with big sword like in other 'Supergiant' games. You will play some team sport which reminds me of basketball and handball but with a magic in there. Moreover, you can have only 3 people in team but there are more than 3 characters and every single one of them have they own powers (don't fuck with Ti'zo, alright?). So every game you can pick others. And the soundtrack makes this game even better than it is. It's the first game soundtrack which I can listen on every day base without playing the game. Enjoy your game and remember “When the stars align, the rites shall come to bear.”
