Resident Evil 2 reviews

This is how you do a remake the right way. Immaculately designed environments with brilliant ui choices (I love the map and how it shows you exactly what rooms you have cleared and where items are, saving you the hassle of having to run around aimlessly looking for ammo and key items). The mood is perfect, with the lighting really creating a sense of dread as you wander down dark hallways or rush through the mansion trying to escape the Tyrant.

Speaking of Tyrant, the way they introduce him is perfect. Letting you learn the layout of the map before throwing your sense of comfort out the window by introducing someone who will chase you down is a good way to shake things up, and I was genuinely scared of mr x througout the game.

I have been a resident evil fan my whole life, and I love the last few games they have put out. Happy to see them pulling out of their nose dive after the atrocity that was resi 6.

This was a fun game. I wasn't wowed. But I'd put it in my top 100 all time

This REmake deserves all the praise it cant get! There is just so much love in that game you can literally feel it while playing.

RE2 looks good and feels good. It is an impressive remaster, but I think it’s over rated. I don’t understand why it is getting such high praise. It is in many game of the year talks and I don’t think it deserves to be there. The story is fine. The dialogue is hilariously bad at times due to the language difference. This type of game is simple but clever at times. The big hat man was a highlight. It’s not as good as The Evil Within (although you can see how TEW takes a lot from the first game) and definitely not as good as RE7. This was a fun solid experience but not more.

Final Score: A-
Resident Evil 2 is a remake of the classic horror game from 1998. I never played the original, so I can't compare this one to it. To start, the game is a horror game, so it's very scary. I'm not much into horror games, but I enjoyed the game. I felt like it didn't throw too many jumpscares at you. There are especially many jumpscares in the beginning of the game, which suits the vibe of you being new in town. In some parts of the game, you'll be constantly followed by the terrifying Tyrant, an unstoppable enemy. This forces you to move quick and these parts are very intense.

The game is about 8 hours long, but never feels dragged out. The game has two main protagonists, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Leon is on his first day as a cop when the game takes place, meanwhile, Claire is coming to the city to look for her brother. Before starting the game you'll get to pick who to play as. I would recommend playing through the game at least two times to experience both the protagonist's stories, even though much of it is the same.

The gameplay primarily consists of exploration, puzzles, and survival. The ammunition is very scarce, so you'll have to make your bullets count. The zombies take a lot of bullets to kill, so you'll have to only use your guns when necessary. The puzzles are very diverse and fun to solve, which is great considering that they take up a large sum of the game.

The final thing I want to talk about is the graphics. The lighting is simply phenomenal, and the amount of detail on faces is impressive. This makes the game very immersive to play, and therefore also scarier.

Overall Score: 9/10 - Amazing
+ Intense gameplay
+ The two protagonists each have their own stories, boosting replayability.
+ Stunning graphics with great lightning effects
+ Fun and diverse puzzles
- The game is a little short

Both modern and nostalgic, Resident Evil 2 Remake is the perfect example of how to do a remake. This game captures everything that made RE2 amazing in the 90’s with updated sensibilities and visuals. Doesn't over stay its welcome and offers a fun reason to take it for a second spin.

This is a masterclass in how to remake a game. An absolute joy to play from beginning to end.

My only gripe is the whole Leon and Claire flirting and in general, don't seem to care about the fact that there is a goddamn undead invasion.

This game is fun, scary and if you haven't played it yet, you're doing yourself a disservice. I have never been a RE fan due to certain mechanics such as fixed camera angles but you can be assured I will be buying any other RE remake/new game that comes out in this style.

Favorite Thing: It's nice to see a modern look on a classic.
Least Favorite Thing: Playthrough B was a big let down. It is too much of a repeat: (mostly) the same places, same enemies, same bosses. As a special note, Claire has a big uncanny valley thing going on.

Date Completed: 2019-08-23
Playtime: 15h (Claire A, Leon B)
Enjoyment: 6/10
Recommendation: Enh. If you like horror/zombies/RE play through it on easy.
I've never been more than a passing appreciator of the original Resident Evil 2, and have in fact probably said more than once that it's a tad overrated when compared to its sharper, more focused predecessor. I'm not sure whether that was a help or a hindrance when it came to giving this remake its fair shake, but I do know that this is one hell of a game. Seems to strike the perfect balance between modern gaming QOL concessions and the survival horror tropes of yore. It's not just another tired Resident Evil 4 iteration like the dreadfully boring Revelations games, nor is it an RCPD skin applied to the shockingly great Resident Evil 7, either. No, it's its own new evolution of what RE is, and it makes me really excited to see what comes next.

(and if that's RE3, I'll be there on day one)

Thumbs Up

Played through many times, 100% completion, unlocked Platinum trophy
8/10

+ Extremely satisfying gameplay loop
+ Well thought out map; exploration is a blast
+ Excellent animation and atmosphere
+ Didn't overstay it's welcome; nice and short

- Story wasn't anything special
- Respawning zombies somewhat annoying
This one is simple. Resident Evil 2 felt like true an honest re-make for a classical game. Not only it honors old school UI elements, somewhat glitchy animations, and super cheesy dialogues, but it also brings back long forgotten joy of wanting to complete a game as quick as possible, just to be able to start it again. It's quite uncommon these days. Truly exceptional game I'd easily recommend to every fan of a thrill.

A classic will always be a classic, what I forgot is the claustrophobia that playing in narrow corridors and the tension of not knowing what's around the corner, by the way, this is a game that must be played with headphones, the sounds keep me on an edge and creep the hell out of me, the world needs more games like this.
