About

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is a third-person action-adventure title developed by Crystal Dynamics. It is the direct continuation of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and is the second title in the series.

Plot

The game takes place 1500 years after the events of Blood Omen. It tells the story of Raziel, a lieutenant vampire in the Kain's army. Kain almost kills Raziel and throws him down the Lake of the Dead. However, an elder god saves Raziel from death and turns him into a Soul Stealer to help him take revenge on Kain.

Gameplay

The game is completely different from its predecessor. The game is played from the third person with the player being able to move it by themselves.

The gameplay is based on the ability to travel between the material and spirit worlds. This allows the player to continue on the game's plot. The item interaction in the spirit world is limited, yet it also benefits Raziel as he can pass the gates that he is unable to go through in the material world. Many of the game's puzzles are based on the differences between these two worlds. The puzzle environment of the material world can be completely different in the spirit one.

The game's combat system is based on the hack and slash principle and consists out of multiple attacks and finishing moves. The enemies of Raziel are divided into three groups: humans, spirit beings, and vampires. The main feature of the combat system is the usage of the in-world items as your own weapons.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver reviews and comments

Really interesting and exceptional. Probably best played on an emulator nowadays

LoK: SR is a game that, given its age, has relatively well aged! The atmosphere is successful, the story rather nice and the gameplay surprisingly responsive for the time. The alternation between the fights very based on the dodging and counter-attacks, the puzzle rooms and the bosses with mechanics to understand makes that this game reminds of a Darksiders before the time. Big negative, however, that makes that I have not finished the game: the "checkpoints" too sporadic gold as we return to the starting point when we load a part (the advancement being saved, but not our position), we often find ourselves to run. Note that the controller is not supported correctly and I had to go through a program tier. A minor constraint, but still.

I'm putting a downvote because if you want to play Soul Reaver : don't buy it on steam. The game has no support whatsoever and here are the issues i've been encountering with this version so far : - Messed up controller compatibility ( not even with a 360 controller) : the game detects your gamepad, but the input are in conflict with the keyboard input, for wh atever reason, making it unplayable unless you use Joytokey , Xpadder, or similar external program - Frequent audio glitches : background sound effects that won't stop, sound delay, missing sounds. It fixes itself when you restart the game, but it happened way too often - No other language support and no subtitles : i don't have any problem with english even though i'm french, but for a game where the audio quality kinda sucks, you would at least want some subtitles. There are none, although other language dubbing do exist for this game and all they had to do was to re-import them. That was just lazy. - Game crashes : apparently i'm not the only one with this one, but my game was playing fine until i came across a place where it constantly crashes, preventing me from progressing and making the game unbeatable. It always ahppen at the same place, but for what i understand, other people got this bug too, but at different places. Anyway, game's unbeatable now, and i feel♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥that i paid for it. Anyway, about the game itself, it's okay i'd say : it's a nice mix between a Tomb Raider and a Metroidvania style of game. You explore levels, solve riddles, find new powers that grant you access to even more levels, etc etc. Unfortunately, the controls didn't really age well, it has this very clunky feeling of early 3D platformers, and the camera can be a nightmare sometimes. But it's not that bad, it's playable and enjoyable. But don't buy it on steam. We shouldn't give money for such lazy and unfonctionnal ports.
