About

The Cave is a puzzle-platform/adventure video game developed be only one person – Ron Gilbert who previously worked in LucasArts. He had an idea for 20 years to create a game about cave that lures people in it to explore darkest sides of their personalities. The Cave uses similar concepts from other game made by the same creator – Maniac Mansion. There is a cast of seven different characters and the player should choose three of them to explore the cave. Most of the game’s puzzle require a cooperation of three characters in order to overcome tasks. Each character has its special abilities and some puzzles require specific abilities to overcome them. The game is designed to be replayed several times in order to know all the things, character combinations in puzzles and secrets.
The Cave tells a story about a talking cave which has labyrinthine set of tunnels within it. Seven different characters decide to go into the cave to learn something about themselves and who they might become.

The Cave reviews and comments

The game is very well done, can boast of great graphics and contains a lot of black humor (I can only agree with Bernd Lappe). Just a few bugs with the controls can be annoying. Sometimes it happens that the game does not respond to keystrokes at all. Then helps only a restart. Moreover, it can happen that one stumbles over the famous bow, that the figure by itself air. The scientist, for example, has a weakness for left. These bugs give a star deduction. Otherwise five stars!

Given that I grew up playing with Labyrinth, Maniac Mansion and Zak McKraken. I have just finished the game and it is embarrassing the stupidity of this story when compared to the videogames of the past (80s-90s). Unpleasant characters, without any personality. Narrative voice that tries at all costs to be ironic but the level is that of the TV series. The graphic serves to conceal the smallness of the content. Probably those who do not know the first products of Ron Gilbert will not understand this rectification, but I was really surprised by the dizzying decline in quality. I can't believe this story was written by the same author of Maniac Mansion.

Wonderful! Already the beginning. The narrator is the cave itself in English, but with German subtitles (already preset). Great tells, witty, black humor everywhere, I've never seen anything like that in a game. But is first class! A jump'n run adventure. Choose three out of seven characters to go through the whole adventure. Depending on your choice, the stories are different. (3 out of 7, that makes 35 combinations of figures.) The riddles consist of letting the figures co-ordinate the right objects with the corresponding objects. Sometimes you have to bring the pieces to certain positions so that something happens, then again only one figure can progress thanks to its characteristics And again and again lovingly designed worlds, amusing secondary characters, sarcasm, witty dialogues and actions, dark secrets and and and .. man uss actually play the game several times to have discovered everything. Only rarely you do not get on at all. Games on the iMac in full resolution. Picture perfect, no stuttering. Writing in subtitles makes streaks, but I think that's wanted. Keyboard control learned quickly. One should look at the beginning of the game but the special ability of each figure in the instructions. Highly recommended. (My purchase price: 8.99)
