Neopets: The Darkest Faerie is a genuinely fun action platformer game, despite a generous amount of jank that somehow doesn't really manage to detract from the experience. It's got a relatively simple story but it does everything else pretty darn well. The combat system can be a bit off-putting at first, but there are multiple attacks to spice things up and a clever Pokemon style weakness system that you and your enemies share. Some enemies are aligned to different elements, so a certain alignment will deal more damage, defend better etc.

On top of this, Darkest Faerie is a very good looking game, and it manages 60fps with little to no slowdown (with the rare late game exception - for good reason, enemies come out of the woodwork). It also has what may be one of the greatest soundtracks to a video game. Every track is brilliantly composed and each area is perfectly complimented by its track.

There are a shocking amount of sidequests in this game, though most are fetch quests they seem a lot less tedious and there's always something new to do (and new stuff to loot, like shiny new swords and wands!) The variance in interesting environments and unique enemies does a pretty good job of preventing boredom.

Fair warning however, Darkest Faerie is a glitchy game. In my experience I was only able to achieve any game breaking glitches on purpose but your mileage may vary. Save often.

I wholeheartedly recommend NDF to 3D platforming + action RPG fans. And hey, even if you don't enjoy those genres, why not give it a try anyway?

It's a game with a very personal story. The story and the sea combined with the monsters made me try this one out and are the things that make me recommend it. The gameplay is very simple and gets repetitive towards the end, but the game is very short so it didn't bother me too much. The controls could be sharper also.
Good game but almost no online matches.

Very fun to play with friends, not easy at all, with some levels that require several attempts before completion.

Was enjoyable exploring and such, but got monotonous after several hours of the same thing.
I'm torn between giving this a Meh or Recommended status. There are so many things wrong with it that I cannot let pass on a critical standpoint. There are also things I really enjoy about it. The initial episode is a homerun. We get those lovable side characters that were so prevalent in the first season. Everything changes and we have to start the survival of two brothers. Wonderful execution here. And then things start to fall apart. The episodes that follow become an amalgamation of chopped up story bits, mixed with filler content that we are forced to partake in. It's like all the episodes were written by different people or different teams. There hardly seems to be any proper conflict. When it gets thrown at us, especially in the later episodes, it's so disjointed and absurd that it's almost laughable. I guarantee almost none of the Diaz's troubles would happen in reality. Not to mention some absolutely heavy handed racism that just had to make an appearance. It's immature. It's unrealistic. It's poor writing. I really did get drawn in with a lot of the side characters, and they are part of why I had some enjoyment. Overall, it's a big sigh in a franchise that I adore.

Really should have played this *after* The Outer Worlds. The level of emotional and intellectual depth and complexion here is so far beyond any game I've played and beyond most other stories in other media. I'll be chasing the feeling this game gave me for a long time.
